Safeguarding & Child Protection

Safeguarding at Stockham

At Stockham Primary School we are committed to safeguarding children and young people and we expect everyone who works in our school to share this commitment.

Adults in our school take all welfare concerns seriously and encourage children and young people to talk to us about anything that may worry them.

Safeguarding Team

The safeguarding team is in charge of keeping children safe at home and at school. They are called Designated Safeguarding Leads. At Stockam Primary School they are:

  • Mrs Jess Wylde - EYFS & KS1 Leader
  • Miss Helen Werrell - Assistant Headteacher
  • Mrs Vikki Marsh-Ballard - Headteacher
  • The Governor responsible for Safeguarding is - Mrs  Fiona Henderson.

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.

Safeguarding means:

  • protecting children from abuse and maltreatment  whether that is within or outside the home, including online
  • preventing the impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development
  • ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
  • taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.

Safeguarding children and child protection guidance and legislation applies to all children up to the age of 18.

What is Child Protection?

Child Protection is part of Safeguarding and promoting welfare. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, significant harm.

Communication with Parents

Our school will always discuss concerns with parents/carers and consent for any referrals should be sought unless to do so would:

  • place the child at risk of significant harm or further risk of significant harm.
  • place a vulnerable adult at risk of harm.
  • compromise any enquiries that need to be undertaken by children’s social care or the police.
What to do if you think a child is at risk of abuse or neglect

Immediate danger

If you think a child is in immediate danger, call the police on 999.

Immediate concern

The Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) is the front door to Children’s Social Care for all child protection and immediate safeguarding concerns. If there is an immediate safeguarding concern where a child is deemed at risk or has potentially suffered significant harm, the MASH team should be contacted immediately.

For example:

  • Allegations/concerns that the child has been sexually/physically abused.
  • Concerns that the child is suffering from severe neglect or other severe health risks.
  • Concern that a child is living in or will be returned to a situation that may place him/her at immediate risk.
  • The child is frightened to return home.
  • The child has been abandoned or parent is absent.

If you have a concern about a child, please call MASH on 0345 050 7666 during office hours (8.30am – 5pm, Monday to Thursday, 8.30am – 4pm, Friday)

Outside office hours call the Emergency Duty Team on 0800 833 408

If you are a member of the public and have a non immediate concern you can report this using this link Reporting a concern- member of the public

Prevent duty

Schools have a legal duty, called the Prevent duty, to “have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.

At Stockham Primary School we take safeguarding extremely seriously and are aware that radicalisation can have a similarly effect on young people, families and communities. Protecting children from the influence of extremist ideas is therefore an important part of our school’s safeguarding role.

By fostering a strong school ethos, underpinned by our values and curriculum, and actively promoting fundamental British values (democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance) we actively promote our children’s resilience to extremist narratives and prepare them for life in modern Britain. Online Safety

Stockham Primary School recognises the benefits and opportunities which new technologies offer to teaching and learning. We encourage the use of technology in order to enhance skills and promote achievement. However, the accessible and global nature of the internet and variety of technologies available mean that we are also aware of potential risks and challenges associated with such use.
