Behaviour & Rewards

During the school day, our staff will ensure the safety and welfare of each child by creating a happy and calm environment where effective learning can take place. We offer a relational approach and understand that every interaction is an intervention.

To support this, we have devised ‘The Kando Way’ and a behaviour curriculum which is capable of being understood by the youngest child at Stockham . The children know that they are part of a community where we are polite to each other, we treat everyone with respect and we show understanding, empathy and kindness to everyone. In classes children show 100% to demonstrate that they are ready to learn and try their best.

This 'Kando Way’ describes the behaviours and habits that we expect our pupils to demonstrate, and is underpinned by our seven learning values of:

  • Respect for all
  • Collaborate
  • Give it a go
  • Stay focussed
  • Show resilience
  • Take responsibility
  • Think things through
It is also based on the EEF’s Summary of recommendations in the document, ‘Improving Behaviour in Schools’, which states:
  • Consistency and coherence at a whole-school level are paramount
  • Behaviour programmes are more likely to have an impact on attainment outcomes if implemented at a whole-school level
Positive behaviours will be rewarded with:

  • Smile from an adult
  • Thumbs Up
  • Verbal Praise
  • Written Praise
  • Kando Points
  • Kando Stickers
  • Kando Raffle Tickets
  • Kando Note Home
  • Kando of the Week
  • Kando Postcard Home
  • Kando of the Term- ACE
  • Kando Time
  • Celebration Book

When a pupil’s behaviour falls below the standard that can reasonably be expected of them, staff will respond in order to restore a calm and safe learning environment, and to prevent recurrence of misbehaviour.

We promote a 6-step-approach to de-escalating unacceptable behaviour and a clear script that is shared and understood by all staff is used to help pupils make positive choices towards refocussing their behaviour.

  • Adult look
  • Positive comment to another child
  • Verbal reminder
  • Thinking Space
  • Choice Card
  • Consequence Card - loss of breaktime
  • Speak to SLT
  • Instant Consequence Card for verbal/physical aggression

Adaptations

While the ‘Kando  Way’ is for all pupils, it will be applied differently in different year groups depending on pupils’ ages and may be applied differently depending on individual pupils’ SEND needs. Sensitivity must be applied at all times when teaching the behaviour curriculum. Some of our children may benefit from a relational support plan to help encourage positive behaviours and learning in school. This approach aims to enable children to feel safe, connected, and capable – forming positive relationships and enjoying learning.

If behaviour might lead to a fixed-term suspension or permanent exclusion, we will follow statutory Department for Education guidance – details of which can be found here: DFE exclusion guidance.
